Jak Is A Four Letter Word to debut September 22nd at Babylon

jak is a four letter word
The other day I was thinking about some of the more outlandish solo shows that I used to put on years ago. Boy were those fun! Why did I stop doing them?

"Well, you got sick of them," I thought instantly, followed soon after by "no, that's too easy of an answer, and besides that, it isn't true at all."

I realized that to really answer the question, I'd have to remember lots of small details of circumstances of the time as well as (and so much more important than that), my mindset of the time -- all the ideas, biases, limitations, interests, and knowledge I held during that period. Not to mention influences from friends, girlfriends, acquaintances, culture...

It struck me all at once then how truly unique every moment of life is, regardless of if that's acknowledged or not. In many cases, change one seemingly insignificant aspect and you alter the timbre, if not the entire scene. By this point, I couldn't even remember what the question was, and so went on with my day.

A few hours ago I got contacted by the fantastic noise artist and Flaccid Plastic ultra-underground record label operator Dingle who you may recall I met in March at Babylon. He'd moved back to New Orleans and was having his big return show at Babylon on September 22nd and asked if I was interested in opening for him. Of course I was!

After a round of calls and texts, none of the band were available for a show on that date. Still, I couldn't say no to being part of Dingle's homecoming show. Doing a standard solo acoustic set wouldn't fit with the show either. It was at this point I remembered the question I'd been thinking on a few days ago, decided the best answer was "who really cares?" and set about putting together an even more bizarre solo show than I could have ever dreamed of back then.

It's called Jak Is A Four Letter Word, and it's a deconstruction of pop culture and music and myself, or some other pretentious bullshit. Oh all right, it's just me being really really weird on stage for a half hour. Come see its debut (and possible swansong as well) at Babylon on September 22nd, and please stay for Dingle who has to be seen to be believed.

What does Atari have to do with independent westerns?

Last month I picked up an SIO2PC interface and dug up my old Atari 800XL drive and 100+ floppy disks so I could back them up on my PC, a project I'd been meaning to get done about ten years ago. Thanks to emulation I was able to run the backed up disk images on the PC as well, so it was really cool seeing stuff on them I hadn't seen since I was a kid.

Among the files was an Atariwriter+ file that contained a truly atrocious script for a western named "Targeted!!!" that I'd written when I was 6. After transcribing it to Notepad, I showed it to some friends and somebody joked that I should film it.

It was such a bad idea that I couldn't stop thinking about it. I thought, wouldn't it be funny to shoot this pointless story and horrible dialogue with the most loving attention to direction and presentation? I started researching historical fashions, weapons and locations and began pricing wardrobe and props.

As days passed, more talented people and money got committed to the project. At some point I realized I might really regret having all these great resources and using them for just a simple joke film. I wrote a new story and script using the same characters and settings from the original, this time with a focus on rapid dialogue and stylish action sequences (it makes a lot more sense as well!) The new goal is now to shoot both scripts, "Targeted" and "Targeted!!!", at the same time.

We've put together an Indiegogo campaign to help offset the cost of making the movies the way we think they deserve to be made, and I've got so many tie-in projects planned to go with it. Basically, you'll be seeing a lot of Targeted-related stuff here for a good while!

The Indiegogo campaign is live as of midnight last night over at indiegogo.com/targeted, with lots of early-release and exclusive perks for supporters. There's also a Facebook page you can follow at facebook.com/targetedfilm if you're the Facebook page following type.

"Final Trip Across The Old Huey P. Long Bridge"

Documenting something else from New Orleans that ain't there no more.

huey p. long bridge
For as long as I can remember, my mother hated bridges. She told me why a long time ago, though I forgot the specifics. Living on the westbank of New Orleans provided a lot of "adventure" for her, since most of the really cool stuff is on the other side of a big nation-cutting river from it.

As a child I'd regularly ride over the GNO, the Luling Bridge and the Huey P. Long Bridge with my parents, Mom nearly hyperventilating in the passenger seat, "You're too close to the side, watch out for that car in front!" and Pop unable to resist having some fun. "Oh, would you look at that boat, what does it say on the side?" he'd ask, taking a hand off the wheel and pointing while squinting at the boat. She especially hated the Huey P. Long Bridge.

It wasn't until my friends started getting cars and driving that I realized that hating the Huey P. Long Bridge was a nearly universal experience. The lanes were too narrow, there were no shoulders, driver's IQs dropped twenty points as soon as they got on it, the exits at the bottom were a confusing mess -- from all I was told, if you could drive the Huey without cracking, you were ready for anything Louisiana roads could throw at you. Truth or not, there was definitely something to it if only psychologically, because when I started driving, I felt like I was still only just practicing until I finally drove over the Huey. Once I did that, I was a bona fide driver in my mind. I've been told by numerous people that I'm not the only one who looked at it that way.

And now there's a vacancy in what was driving's final exam for many New Orleans-area drivers, as the old lanes of the Huey P. Long Bridge were closed last week and replaced with much wider and more modern lanes. For the curious or masochistically nostalgic, I shot Angie and I's last trip over the old lanes on video, and you can check it out here.

365 eulogies album art
Memory is a funny thing because it almost always gets something wrong. Entire weeks and weeks of experiences can get completely whited out while a memorable day paints the entire recollection of a period of time. If there were ever an unreliable narrator, it's your own mind.

I bring this up because I'm remembering an interview with Fiona Apple that my brain keeps telling me was conducted by Quentin Tarantino though that sounds so ridiculous that I'm almost ashamed to look it up on Google, as if the search engine's going to make fun of me or something. I'm also two paragraphs deep into this, so I can't go looking it up now.

Anyway, Tarantino or not isn't important. Every now and then, I'll hear or read something that either resonates with me so much or is just such an interesting concept that it sticks in my mind verbatim for years. In this interview, Fiona Apple was talking about putting out an album and said "I really really honestly do not know if I will ever write a song again. If you have just made something, you should feel like you've got nothing left in you."

My new 7 track EP "365 Eulogies" is now live for streaming on this site and is being uploaded on numerous sites for free download as I write this. It picks up where December's "Tomorrow Is Postponed" left off--I like to think of those as two halves of a complete full length album. If I'd have been a bit more patient in December, maybe they would have been!

All right, I just looked it up and it turns out I wasn't crazy. Tarantino was indeed part of that interview on a show called "Iconoclasts" in 2006. Here's a clip from it (unless YouTube has taken it down at the time you're reading this)--the part I remember is at the very end of the video.

dingle & jak
Last week I saw there was a bill at a local club that needed two more acts. I'd just played there the weekend before, and the only person in my band available for the date was my guitarist Brad who happened to also play drums. I hadn't done a two-piece rock set in years and had never heard Brad on drums. I took the show anyway.

The other act that got booked to fill the third slot was a DJ who called himself "Dingle". When I got to the club for the show on Saturday, everyone kept telling me what an abrasive and just completely weird show Dingle put on the last time he had played there. Nobody really went into specifics though, so even with ten different descriptions, I still didn't have a clue on what to expect. How frustrating!

Brad and I did our set and hung out afterwards, talking to people and watching the second act Logarda play. When they were done, Dingle set up a table and his equipment and proceeded to hold everyone in the club's attention in a death grip for the next thirty-five minutes. And now that I'm telling you about this, or trying to, I suddenly understand why nobody went into specifics because it really was indescribable. GG Allin meets Masonna, the Dust Brothers have a nightmare, masochistic Curly, I don't know, you know what, just go see this guy perform!

dustpan ballads of the total stoned model citizen album art
Talking to him after the show, I found out he also heads the experimental label Flaccid Plastic Records which has just released a reissue of "Dustpan Ballads Of The Total Stoned Model Citizen" today! Download it from here and then check out their other artists while you're there--if you're into noise art, extreme sonic experimentation and bizarre music, there's a lot to keep you busy for a while!

  New site!

JakLocke.com gets all streamlined on you.

Since I bet you've been on the internet for a while now, I probably don't have to tell you that sites get redesigned all the time. When a site that I visit a lot changes dramatically, I always have the same logical and well thought out initial reaction: shock and immediate baseless disgust. "How dare they!" I think loudly. And then I can't wait to find out exactly what they've screwed up so I can complain loudly about it, because I've been on the internet for a while too and that's the kind of mindset it gives you sometimes.

Those of you who have been coming here since 2001 know exactly how much of a hypocrite I am for this. More recent visitors, let me help you: you're currently staring at version 18 of this site. Take into consideration that version 17 lasted two years and version 15 for three and a half years, and yeah, wow, this site's pretty schizophrenic, isn't it.

At least from my experience, site overhauls occur for one of only two reasons: a perceived lack of functionality, or boredom. That "perceived" bit is important! You can get a feel for how in or out of touch you really are with your audience by simply moving a few things around. Just ask Twitter or Facebook's programmers.

Then again, maybe it's just human nature to react that way to unannounced change. Or maybe it's just me. Many times I've said "I never wanted [x]!" when a site adds some new alien aspect, only to later cry "Hey, why'd they take away [x]?!" when they invariably phase it out in the next site design. Exact same indignation with different words. That's really pretty silly now that I'm thinking about it!

In any case, hypocrite or not, this site is more streamlined and clear than any of the previous seventeen iterations ever were--and yes, I'm pretty sure I felt exactly that way about all the previous versions too, even the ugly unnecessary ones that were born from boredom.

Things are going to work a little strange (or not at all in some cases) for a few days as the rest of this thing gets uploaded. Most of you know how that goes by this point. And hey look, you can leave comments now!
